The Vatan family have been making wine in the Loire valley for 300 years, with father and daughter team Philippe and Agathe Vatan currently in charge. (We’re big fans of father-daughter enterprises, can’t think why…)
The Château du Hureau vineyards spread across 20 hectares in the Saumur-Champigny appellation and are organically and biodynamically farmed. Yeilds are low and all grapes are hand-picked in successive pickings.
The Tuffe cuvée (previously known as their “Grande Cuvée), is named after the “tuffeau” (‘la Touffe’) limestone rock on which the Cabernet Franc grapes grow.
The wine is soft, rich and full. On the nose it’s perfumed with black cherry and cassis aromas. It is fresh and supple with a good mouth feel.
This really is a superb Cabernet Franc.
Observer critic David Williams raves about it too, praising the ‘perfectly modulated cherries.’
