Niepoort has been an independent family business since its creation in 1842. Today it is led by the fifth generation, Dirk Niepoort, supported by his sons Daniel and Marco. Dirk has been a relentless innovator and creative throughout his time at Niepoort.
Having focused initially on the Douro, Dirk began aquiring rare old vines in Dão in 2012 in order to further his passion for producing spectacular table wines showcasing local, indigenous varieties.
This red ‘field blend’ is what Dirk calls a ‘straight-forward’ wine, full of the freshness and versatility of the sub-region Gouveia on the slopes of the Serra da Estrela Mountain. Expect aromatic herbs, cherries, a touch of minty freshness on and tobacco on the nose, which follow through into a delicate, light and balanced palate.
This is definitely one we’d recommend trying chilled….just don’t ask us to pronounce the grapes!
